Most of the day has been dedicated to making food. I started the morning with a chicken broth which has been simmering for well over five hours, so should be full of flavor. I then proceeded to cooking kale as a side for later in the week seeing Kale needs to be cooked for a few hours and ideally reheated. This also enabled me to use up all of the duck fat I still had. Next up I tried myself at making sauerkraut. Supposedly one just needs to slice the cabbage, salt it and then knead it until it is tender. I have now put it into a jar with bay leaves and all spice and will wait to see what happens to it. Lastly, I made cranberry sauce, just because it is a nice thing to have around the house and cranberry season is almost over.
When I came back from the pool later in the afternoon, I made crayfish in garlic butter, sauté Spinach (for me) and garlic oven roasted potato (for EM), which ended my cooking endeavors for the day. In hindsight I should probably have made a lemon mayonnaise for the crayfish. Oh well, we enjoyed it as it came.
I am rereading Isabelle Allende’s “The Sum of our days” which I read a long time ago, so do not remember enough to be able to discuss the book with the book club ladies. I hope to get through it in a few days though as many parts of her life come back as I skip through the book.
Tomorrow is a full workday, but I have taken a half day to watch the inauguration with our bubble family on Wednesday so it will be a relaxed week.
Reported new infections are going down with only 174k cases added over the past 24 hours to bring the US total to 24.5 million cases. With California just having discovered its own highly infectious mutant which seems to be prevailing across the State and is likely going to spread to other States, the drop in cases is presumably only a short respite unless people mask up, socially distance and stay home.
